Are You Flexible?

"Am I doing EFT?"

What is that question, even? One of the beautiful and difficult things about EFT is "the map" doesn't consist of straight lines. There are several streets that will take you to the same place. And, there are several options of places (the goal of therapy can change throughout the course).

For most EFT therapists, trusting themselves is the last accomplishment in the EFT journey. It takes doubting EVERYTHING before you get there. I think this is necessary. You have to doubt in order to trust.

And, then - when you start to trust yourself - you know your way and you don't even want a map with straight lines. You learn to celebrate imperfect EFT - you prefer it, actually.

When it comes down to it - is it really about you being a better therapist than someone else? Who are you competing with? Even if you're just competing with yourself - what's your end goal?

If you lose flexibility, you lose curiosity. If you lose curiosity - your clients don't feel you.

The next time you ask "Is this EFT?" - give yourself permission to doubt everything. You're on your way back to yourself. This model is amazing and I'll never do anything else. However - if my whole self isn't in the room, what good is any model?

My clients don't necessarily think the model is what helps them. They think it's me. AND, best compliment ever - they give themselves credit. That's when I know we've really done something special.
