Attunement 101
Let's define attunement, shall we? In the EFT world, we use this word all the time - but are we talking about the same thing?

Here's what Webster says:
attune
verb
at·tune | \ ə-ˈtün , -ˈtyün\
attuned; attuning; attunes
Definition of attune
1: to bring into harmony : TUNE
2: to make aware or responsive

How about we combine those definitions and give ourselves a working EFT definition?
EFT therapists attune to themselves and their clients to respond and bring into harmony an emotional experience.
I had a beautiful supervision session with someone last week who was practicing attunement with me. She told me about the place that she gets stuck. We went there (to where she would normally freeze, go to her head and leave the model). It happened again.
I asked her what she was feeling. She said "nothing!" I said, "Ah. Ok - so let's start over and this time don't worry about anything except tuning into me. Do it until you feel it in your own body."
She closed her eyes (I think to tune into herself) and then we did take two. Even though it was a role play, I felt it inside - she felt it inside. We were in harmony and then she knew exactly what to do (she could find herself on the EFT map).
Before you question yourself as an EFT therapist: not knowing what to do, where you are, where to go - try practicing attunement. You can do this with anyone - it doesn't have to be a supervisor. Practice tuning in with a friend or loved one until you both feel it and you're synced up. It feels like connection, excitement and warmth.
This experience of harmony frees you up to access the part of your brain that you need in order to know where to go next. Remember, syncing up comes first.
