How to Make the Most out of EFT Supervision

Let me help you get some bang for your buck. If you're in EFT Supervision, or thinking about it - here are some tips to help you prepare:

1 - Test out your technology BEFORE supervision. Make sure you know how to share your screen and pull up your recording if your supervisor is using a teleconferencing platform (like Zoom or Webex). If you're meeting in person and have a recording you want to share - test it out on your computer before your meeting.
Bonus points if you have external speakers or a transcript of the part you want your supervisor to watch!

2 - Make sure your tape is cued up where you want your supervisor to watch. No supervisor will watch your whole tape. Like therapy - we're trying to get to the heart of the matter. Show us where you think you might need help, where you feel stuck or where you feel you nailed it and you want a little affirmation. (Don't only show the good stuff - what's the point in that? We're trying to grow, right?)

3 -  DO NOT tell every detail of the couples background or of your last session. (this is the inspiration for The Office gif listed above). Do some conceptualizing ahead of time. Figure out where you think you are on the EFT map (is this couple in stage 1, do you think they are de-escalated?, do you think you've done deeper work?/potentially stage 2?). Give basic information to set the stage (i.e. - trauma history, addiction, infidelity, anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, etc.). If you feel really lost, say that and then let your supervisor ask questions to help you conceptualize.

4 - EFT supervisors are trying their best NOT to do therapy for you. They're trying to do for you what you do for your clients. Walk alongside you, help you access stuck places and help you come to conclusions on your own. If you feel frustrated because your supervisor won't give you answers - it's because he/she believes in you.

5 - Get over yourself with role play. You can't learn EFT without having an experiential component to supervision. If your supervisor isn't initiating it, ask for role plays or to show tapes. We only grow by DOING.

6 - Budget time and/or money for monthly supervision or some kind of continuing ed (watching a webinar, watching your own tapes, actual supervision, etc.). If you love EFT, you've already invested time, money and energy toward learning it. You've figured out that learning this model is like filling a leaky bucket. You can't fill it up once and be good to go. You need to keep filling your bucket.
